Copper for Cattle: Why It Matters More Than You Think

The time is right to start thinking about copper supplementation – especially in young stock. Copper is critical in supporting robust growth – it is typically at its lowest in winter and at the start of spring, so getting ahead of the curve is essential.

Why do my cattle need copper?

Symptoms of a copper deficient diet in youngstock can include:

  • Reduced growth rates

  • Scours

  • Loss of coat colour

  • Reduced reproductive performance

How do I know if my cattle need copper?

Liver biopsies are the most reliable way to understand the copper status of your animals – levels vary between individuals, so taking 10 samples before winter to help guide supplementation is a good idea. Biopsies from culled animals can also be requested from the works.

So, what do I give them?

There are multiple ways of supplementing copper – meaning there is something to suit every system.

  • Copaject is a one-off injectable option for animals over 4 months of age.

  • Coppermax capsules are another great option, providing sustained copper release from within the rumen.

What about copper toxicity?

Copper toxicity can be seen in animals fed Palm Kernel (PK) and supplemented at the same time. If you’re concerned about this, liver biopsies are the best way to understand the supplementation needs of your animals.
